It was the home opener scheduled for week 1 against the Beavercreek Beavers. The Indians have not won a home opener for week 1 since 1997, ironically it wasBeavercreek. The atmosphere was perfect for a Friday night game in the great football state ofOhio.
We started out slowly finding ourselves down 14-0 in the second quarter before we got on the board with a nice long drive capped by a 1 yard run by Kyle Wheeler. The defense held for the remainder of the first half. Taking it into the locker room, the score was Beavercreek 14-Fairfield7. We started fast out of the gates with a 75 yard kick off return for a touchdown by Tyler White. After the Ryan Nuss extra point we were all tied at 14-14. However,Beavercreekanswered with a long, time chewing drive, to score another time and put the score at 21-14. Our offense answered one more time with another nice drive capped again by another Kyle Wheeler touchdown run. This time it covered 23 yards. As we entered the fourth quarter it was all tied again 21-21. Possession went back and forth untilBeavercreek’s final drive. They were able to put a drive together, and travel far enough intoIndainTerritoryto kick a 24 yard field goal with 7 seconds on the clock.
It was a tough loss for our young men, but we feel that there were a lot of bright spots as we competed the entire game. After viewing the film, there were some things that we did very well, as well as some others that we struggled with. Expectations are, that we will continue to get better this week as we prepare for another home game against the Piqua Indians.
